UNDERSTANDING THE KINGDOM OF GOD Lecture 2
THE TERM AMBASSADORS - Dictionary Definition is:
1. An official Messenger sent to a Sovereign or a public
body.
2. A minister of the highest rank, who permanently
represents His sovereign or country at a foreign court,
and has the right to a personal interview with the
foreign Sovereign or Chief magistrate.
3. An appointed or official messenger.
4. One with full power to sign treaties and act for His
Sovereign.
An Ambassadors life is spent among people who usually
speak a different language, who have a different tradition
and a different way of life. So we live in the world;
partake in all the life and work of the world, but our
citizenship is in heaven.
WE ARE AMBASSADORS OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD.
God is going to take over this mess of a world. We are
proclaiming that good news, because when King Jesus rules
there will be no more war. There will be peace and
prosperity for all.
THE KINGDOM OF GOD - HEAVEN
In the book of Matthew there is reference made to heaven
some 54 times. The very fact that there are so many
references to this subject reveals that it is important
for us to understand.
The book of Matthew is the fortieth book in the Bible and
it brings forth the manifestation of the King (Messiah).
The old Testament has been a complete preparation for the
book of Matthew. The Jews would immediately think of the Old
Testament when reference is made to the Kingdom of God -
Heaven.
A LOOK AT THE OLD TESTAMENT CONCEPT OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD
In the Old Testament we find that God has always possessed
absolute sovereignty and rules as King. Ps. 10:16 - "The
Lord is King forever and ever".
29:10 - "Lord sitteth King forever".
74:12 - "God is my King of old".
Jer. 10:10 - "But the Lord is the true God. He is the
living God, and an everlasting King".
Lam. 5:19 - "Thou, O Lord remainest forever; Thy throne
from generation to generation".
In the beginning God's rule was a theocratic rule. McClain
defines Theocracy as "The rule of God through a divinely
chosen representative who speaks and acts for God; a rule
which has special reference to the human race, although it
finally embraces the universe, and its mediatorial ruler is
always a member of the human race".
Eden - Adam
Human Government - Noah to Abraham
Patriarches - Abraham to Samuel
Kings - Saul, David, Solomon to Jehoikin
Prophets - In this time with the decline of the
theocracy, the future theocratic Kingdom comes to the
fore.
In almost every old Testament prophetic writing there
is reference to the future Kingdom.
It was founded upon the Davidic Covenant. cp 2 Samuel 7:8-13,
1 Chron 17:7. Ps 84:27.
THE MESSIANIC KINGDOM.
Now to the Jews the mention of the Kingdom of God would be to
see the setting up again of God's theocratic rule. It was
the yet future prophetic portions of the Scripture that they
were looking at.
Let's note Chafer's summary of the yet future kingdom.
1. To be theocratic the King will be EMMANUEL, for He is by
human birth the rightful heir to David's throne and born of a
virgin in Bethlehem. Is 7:14; Matt 1:22-23; Is 11:5;
Jer 23:5; Ezek 34:23; Hos 3:4-5; Micah 5:2.
2. To be heavenly in character. Is 2:4; 11:4-5: Jer 33:14-
17; Hos 2:18.
3. To be in Jerusalem and worldwide
a. It will be on earth. Ps 2:8; Is 11:9; 42:4; Jer 23:5;
Zech. 14:9
b. It will be centred at Jerusalem. Is 2:1-3; 62:1-7;
Zech 8:20-23.
c. It will be over re-gathered and converted Israel. Deut.,
30:30; Is. 11:11-12; 14:1-2 ; Ezek. 37:21-25;
Micah 4:6-8
d. Extends to the nations of the earth. Ps 72:11,17; 86:9;
Is. 55:5; Dan. 7:13-14; Micah 4:2; Zech. 8:22.
e. To be established by the returning King. Deut. 30:3;
Ps. 50:3-5; 96:13; Zech. 2:10-13; Mal. 3:1-4.
f. To be Spiritual- in that the will of God will be directly
effective in all matters in human government and conduct.
The kingdom of heaven is the central theme of Christ's
preaching in the Gospels. The term "Kingdom of Heaven" was
mostly used by Matthew where as the term, "Kingdom of God"
was used in Mark and Luke. The fact that the book of Matthew
was written to the Jews would help explain the usage of the
term "Kingdom of Heaven" in that of the reverence and the
reluctance in Judaism to use the name of God.
JOHN THE BAPTIST - Matt. 3:2 "The Kingdom of Heaven is at
hand". It was that which the Jews had long awaited. In his
preaching he gave announcement to that of divine judgement
as a reality which is immediately at hand. The axe is
already laid at the root of the tree. God's coming as
King is above all else a coming to purify, to sift, and to
judge. No one can evade it, nor buy exemption from it,
not even the ability to claim Abraham as father.
John at the same time points to the coming one who is
following him, whose forerunner he is himself. The coming
one comes with the winnowing fan in his hand. In view of His
coming the people must repent and submit to the baptism for
the washing away of sins, so as to escape the coming wrath
and participate in the salvation of the Kingdom and the
Baptism of the Holy Spirit will be poured out when He comes.
Matt. 3:1-2.
KINGDOM IN CHRIST'S TEACHING
Christ continued the Kingdom of Heaven. But His proclamation
differed in two aspects.
1. While it retains without qualification, the announcement
of judgement and the call to repentance, it the saving
significance of the Kingdom that stand in the foreground.
2. The pith and core. It was not just a reality which was
at hand, but as a reality already present. IN HIM THE GREAT
FUTURE HAS ALREADY BECOME THE PRESENT TIME.
Evidenced by His Teaching
His Miracles
The Strong Man's house has been invaded.
When John sent his disciples questioning was He the Messiah,
Jesus left them with a vision of what was happening.
Luke 7:18 ; Luke 7:22 .
THE KINGDOM HAS COME WITH HIM AND IN HIM.
The Secret of belonging to the Kingdom lies in belonging
to Him. Matt. 7:23 ; Matt. 25:41.
CHRIST TAUGHT
1. Is something new. Mark 1:15 -
2. It is moral and spiritual not political. Matt. 5:3-12 ;
Luke 6:20-27; John 18:36 -
3. It is invisible and internal. Luke 17:20,21 -
4. It is silent, mysterious and progressive. Mark 4:26-29 -
5. It is universal in its design and scope. Matt. 21:31,43 -
6. It is social. Matt. 20:25,28 -
7. By it we enter into a relation not only with God but with
man, but it can only be entered into by regeneration.
